What changed from existing technology?
This study used a special type of MRI to look at how the brain's metabolism changes in people with brain tumors. They found that even in areas of the brain that look normal, there are higher levels of certain chemicals that might indicate metabolic changes.
This study is the first to use hyperpolarized [1-13C]pyruvate MRI to detect altered brain metabolism in the normal appearing brain parenchyma of patients with brain metastases, showing widespread elevated hyperpolarized 13C-lactate and 13C-bicarbonate signals.

What still needs to be solved?
Repeated real-world validation, manufacturability, cost, and long-term stability still require follow-up evidence.
What could change if this succeeds?
This technique may help in monitoring treatment response and understanding the metabolic changes in brain metastases, potentially guiding future therapeutic strategies.
